EARLIEST PIC OF HOUDINI BROTHERS?

© Sharon Kurlansky

If we're reading it right, there's reason to believe this is the earliest known photo of Harry Houdini as a professional magician. He and brother Dash sure look young. The owner of this picture, our friend Sharon Kurlansky, thinks it was taken before 1893.

Houdiniphiles: please correct us if we've got it wrong.

  1. I was just talking to Richard Hatch about this image -- we were trying to figure out where it came from. It's an incredible image and, yes, it certainly appears to be the earliest image of the boys. There are a few others, but hard to tell if they were taken at the same time. Would love to know where Sharon found this.

  2. Dash appears to be wearing the same stage outfit on page 126 of Henning's His Legend and His Magic. In the Henning book photo, his shoes are lace ups while here they're slippers. Possibly 1892?

  3. Am out of town on family business at the moment, but will try to shed some light on this very soon.

  4. Notice they're wearing contrasting stage outfits to make the transposition crystal clear to the audience.

  5. John, this photo is from my family album. Rose Steiner Newman was my great grandmother, Cecelia's sister.
