This just knocked us out. Two of our personal gods appearing in the same film - and we'd never even suspected its existence!
The magician: John Scarne, known here as "Mr. Calypso." We first learned card sleights and poker strategy from Scarne's Complete Guide to Gambling, a book we borrowed in high school and will never give back.
The spectator: our childhood hero, Robert Benchley. We've written everything he ever wrote. In this film he plays Joseph A. Doakes, a guy trying to buy a present for his son.
The entire ten-minute short, Dark Magic, from 1939, does not appear to be available for viewing at the moment. But here's a little bit more:
