SPIRIT OF HOUDINI LIVES ON

Werner Herzog, for our money, is the embodiment of the artist's fearless spirit. This David Letterman clip was Herzog's first on-camera interview in America.  You will quickly understand why his motto (d'après Houdini) is: "Always carry bolt cutters!"

(The segment from Fitzcarraldo, referenced in the video, is missing. So we're attaching a summer bonus to this post - the entire film, Herzog's first fiction masterpiece, in the clip below!)

We've written about how Herzog contributed to our own film about Jerry Andrus. And how - like Houdini proved at his death - his art was more dear to him than his own life.

The timeless message of Houdini, of Herzog, of Fitzcarraldo, is more than "escape from bondage." It is the overcoming of fear. Take a deep breath, muster your courage and prepare to be blown away.
