THE ILLUSION CHASERS

"It's life's illusions I recall," Dave Van Ronk sings, "I really don't know life -- at all!"

We hope that doesn't happen to Dr. Steven Macknik, the man in this visually lame video.

Macknik is one of the brave souls of neuroscience who is following magicians into the clouds of illusion. We've demonstrated his beloved "eye trackers" in earlier posts. They prove that science is still way behind the curve when it comes to understanding what kind of movement grabs the brain. Magicians have a completely different map of the brain's territory, and they make a living by following it.

Nevertheless, we encourage Dr. Macknik and his colleagues to soldier on, even if the future bodes that magicians' tricks will one day be exposed. We're heartened that at recent conventions of neuroscience researchers, the keynote speakers have all been magicians.
